Modelled loosely on the fabled cabinets, boxes, rooms and chambers of the Renaissance, this exhibition was an invitation to reawaken the unreserved and almost childlike interest and curiosity of age when Europeans shook off the shadows of the Dark Ages and awoke to the fascination of the external world. When people of intellect and time to spare went (for better and for worse) in search of adventure, discovery and illumination, to all the corners of the Earth. They came back with stories full of wonder and brought back specimens full of mystery and promise. Their curiosity changed forever the ways in which humans look upon the world.

File contains scanned copies of photographs donated by Jim Palmer for the Carrington Bay exhibit in 2009, depicting the community living in Carrington Bay in the 1970s and 1980s.
Jim Palmer and Jan Gemmel lived in a house on the west side of the log jam between Carrington Lagoon and Carrington Bay. Jim built the house at the property of John and Anna Gregg in Manson's Landing and relocated it onto pilings in Carrington Bay. Jim and Jan later fabricated steel pontoons for it. In 1985 the house was moved onto the floats and towed into Gorge Harbour by Bob Thompson with his boat "Sutil Chief".

This series contains early film works of George Sirk, shot on 16mm and Super 8 film and digitized by Doug McCaffry, of ScanLab, in 2022. Films include Cortes Island short films, two feature documentaries, and two longer films shot in Australia. They were shown at a film festival presented by Cortes Cinema and the Cortes Island Museum on July 17, 2022: "Out of the Archives: The Early Film works of George Sirk".
From the program notes: "George's films showcase a snapshot - in moving pictures - of some madcap antics, dramatization, and documentaries of life on Cortes during that period [1975-1981] and were inspired by the great humourists of silent film; Chaplin, Keaton and Jacques Tati (Monsieur Hulot), and likewise delight in stitching reality. Mostly shot in sequentially edited (in the camera, like the great film makers mentioned), rehearsals were key to smooth transitions and conserved valuable film stock."

Often wrongly portrayed as "primitive," George attempts to show that the Papuans are indeed modern in their culture and innovation as successfully brought them to the present. This documentary was shot in Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, in 1981. A hunting expedition is followed by rare candid footage of a celebratory "Sing-Sing". Permission to film these timeless momnts was acquired and gratefully acknowledged. Shot on Super 8 film with the assistance and perseverance of Isolde Rutheberg."
